Ice Loads

Ice and Rain loads are applied to all above ground pipe elements and fittings in vertical direction downward. To remove ice loads on some elements, set to zero the ice shape factor.

Available following codes for ice loads:

Dk – Insulation Outer Diameter (specified in pipe properties)

c - Ice Shape Factor (specified in pipe properties)

- Ice load in unit weight (0.9 tf/m3)

fz - height factor

Same as ASCE 7-22

Property

Description

Insulation Outer Diameter

Insulation outer diameter is used for calculation of ice layer area

Elevation of Start/End Node

Greatest elevation is used for calculation of ice load. By default, the elevation above the ground surface for wind and ice load calculation is calculated automatically assuming that the ground plane is horizontal. The option "Recalculation of elevation above a ground surface" should be switched off for pipelines laying on the ground surface with variable heights

Ice Region

Select ice region number from SP 20.13330.2016 maps

Load Type

SUS - if ice load assumed as sustained, OCC - if ice load is assumed as occasional

Basic Ice Thickness

  • ASCE 7-22 (USA): t - Nominal ice thickness due to freezing rain at 33ft (10m)

  • IBC 2021 (International): t - Nominal ice thickness due to freezing rain at 33ft (10m)

  • GB 50135-2019 (China): b - Basic ice thickness

Wind Exposure

  • ASCE 7-22 (USA): B, C, D

  • IBC 2021 (International): Same as ASCE 7-22

Hill Shape

  • ASCE 7-22 (USA)

  • IBC 2021 (International): Same as ASCE 7-22

Height of Hill, H

  • ASCE 7-22 (USA): H - height of hill or escarpment

  • IBC 2021 (International): H - height of hill or escarpment

Crest Distance, Lh

  • ASCE 7-22 (USA): Lh - distance upwind of crest of hill or escarpment to where the difference in ground elevation is half the height of the hill or escarpment

  • IBC 2021 (International): Same as ASCE 7-22

Distance from Crest to Site, x

  • ASCE 7-22 (USA): x - distance upwind or downwind of crest (+ upwind, - downwind)

  • IBC 2021 (International): Same as ASCE 7-22
