3.8.2. Vertical vessel

Table 3.5 shows key features of the base element (shell).

Table 3.5
Fig. 3.27. Vertical vessel: LCS and fixing conditions

Feature Description
Reference points:

A: shell start;

B: shell end;

Local shell coordinate system (LCS):

Axis X: shell transverse axis;

Axis Y: shell transverse axis;

angle θ of nozzle insertion is taken from this axis toward axis X;

Axis Z: shell longitudinal axis.

Orientation in WCS:

Axis Z is vertical.

Axis X and Y are located in horizontal plane.

Shell constraints (dof):

Point A.

All calculations by the finite element method (FEM) fix only bottom end.

Additional information: Shell top (B) is free, which leads to additional flexibility of branch connection.
Flat cap is created at the free end (B), on which pressure will be applied.
Shell loads:

Inner overpressure.

Outer pressure.

Hydrostatic pressure.

Thermal strains.
